2016 Cross Examination Question “Should the Olympic Games Be Abolished?”
It is hoped that for this debate students will research issues relating to numerous aspects of the Olympics organization. Students should be aware of the core values of the Olympic organization, and they should assess whether the current/recent Games still focus on these values. Other research might include a focus on the selection process for host cities by the IOC, the role of judging/officiating in some events, the monetary costs involved in bidding on and hosting and participating in the event, and the long-term economic and cultural legacy created by the event. Students might want to consider the topic of doping at the Olympic and, in light of recent terrorist events, they may want to evaluate the safety of the event and health concerns. The debates should include some discussion on the history of the event and its use as an ideological or political platform.
