Common questions about joining the League and participating in the annual tournament.
When is the tournament taking place next year?
We are evaluating this as the global situation evolves with vaccinations and travel restrictions. At this time we are considering hosting an in-person event after December vacation either late Feb or March 2022. A decision will be made in the fall as to whether we will need to host virtually.
Who is eligible to participate?
Any independent school, anywhere in the world is eligible to join the League and participate. Every year one or two new schools join where there is space. Unfortunately space is limited and preference is given to member schools.
I'm a teacher/coach attending the tournament, what is my responsibility during the tournament?
The tournaments are run by school volunteers. It is important that teachers/coaches representing a school will be present to assist with judging and overall supervision. It is expected that coaches are present at the tournament and with their students during the social events and field trips.
I'm a student at an independent school, am I able to attend by myself?
Schools register and students must be accompanied by their coach or school sanctioned adult chaperone. Individual students cannot participate.
Do you have junior and senior divisions?
No. Students of different grade levels (typically Grades 9-12) participate against each other.
What is the general standard of participant?
This is a high level tournament. Most students have auditioned at their individual schools and put in a great deal of preparation. This is not a tournament for novice public speakers.
My school has completed Registration Phase 1 Intention to Participate, does this guarantee a place in the tournament?
Unfortunately no. Preference is given to current member schools.
How many teams may each school send?
Schools may send one team of up to three students and a coach/chaperone. The host school from the year before may send up to two teams of three students and a coach/chaperone.
Size of tournament
Typically this tournament has been well subscribed and we regret that registration will need to be limited to 160 competitors. Preference will be given to existing League member schools that have regularly participated in recent years. Each year there are usually a few spaces for new schools.
Registration 2021
There is a two-part registration process. In the fall, schools will be invited to initially register interest in participating. Shortly thereafter the host school will confirm participation and request registration fee. Once fees are paid, schools are welcome to register their students and identify speaking categories. This part of the process will go live depending on how the global situation changes.
Exact details and dates will be updated in early June.
Registration fee
The registration fee for this event is usually between $1300-$1900 CAD per school (2017 registration was $1300 CAD, 2019 registration was $1700 USD).
Payment deadline
The payment deadline will be posted when we have a better idea of what the global situation will be.
